The PSA Crink: Affordable AK Performance on Trial

 From a YouTube channel,

The PSA Crink—the shortest AK-style rifle available. At $800 to $1,000, Palmetto State Armory (PSA) has brought what used to be a $3,000+ rifle down to a price point many shooters can afford. Manufactured in the U.S., this compact AK is gaining attention for its affordability, but how does it perform under pressure?

We set out to run this PSA Crink through 5,000 rounds of testing. Why 5,000? With its 8.3-inch barrel, we wanted to compare its durability to the legendary Mk18 AR-15, which has a typical barrel life of 10,000 rounds and a bolt life of 5,000–7,000 rounds. The question: how does this AK hold up under full-auto and suppressed fire?

The Test

During our testing, the PSA Crink demonstrated solid durability and functionality:

  • Rounds Fired: The rifle reached 5,000 rounds, with consistent performance throughout.
  • Accuracy: Despite the short barrel, it maintained combat-effective hits at 350 yards.
  • Wear: Expected wear was observed on the gas port, bolt, and ejector, but no catastrophic failures occurred.

This rifle, shot by everyone from Post Malone to our own crew, is a randomized sample obtained from an FFL. It was converted to full-auto under our SOT for testing purposes. While the Crink showed promise, it’s worth noting that PSA rifles have historically varied in quality control, and experiences may differ between units.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Affordable Entry: At its price, the Crink offers an accessible way to own an AK-style rifle.
  • Customizable: Compatible with a wide range of AK parts and optics.
  • Smooth Operation: Remarkably well-gassed, even during suppressed fire.

Cons:

  • Short Barrel Challenges: Increased wear due to the compact 8.3-inch barrel.
  • QC Variability: Some users report issues requiring returns or adjustments.
  • Limited Support: PSA’s customer service and warranties are not as robust as competitors’.

I'm a regular person who wants to do something positive for others. I've owned a construction company, a WW2 Jeep parts business, a Bullet manufacturing business, and a few other small private businesses. My Gun business was a hobby. I intended to make play money and possibly have a small shop when I retired in 2031. I wanted my shop to be the best experience people could have; I wanted the store to be of value to many people. I want to provide good jobs for people in my town. The call to be the best is attainable because I keep trying to improve on what I have already built. My parents and my 10 years with the Navy Seabees instilled this drive in me. I have also been influenced by many other successful people; I thank my wife, Rachael, and my kids; they are the reason I try so much, as I want to leave them with something if they want it. I thank God as he blesses me with high-quality people in my life.
